Chris Hicks, in the December 10, 2010 Deseret News, offered a list of films made in the past 20 years that “qualify as watchable for those who prefer not to be offended or insulted.” Hicks selected his list from PG movies, leaving out animation and PG-13 movies. These movies, Hicks cautioned, may have some “mild violence or a few profane words, but for the most part are generally free of offensive material.” All of the movies he listed are available on DVD:
1. Hachi: A Dog’s Tale
2. While You Were Sleeping
3. Only You
4. One Fine Day
5. Return to Me
6. I.Q.
7. It Could Happen to You
8. The Rookie
9. Miracle
10. Forever Strong
11. The Greatest Game Ever Played
12. Pride
13. We Are Marshall
14. Remember the Titans
14. Remember the Titans
15. Glory Road
16. Millions
16. Millions
17. Widow’s Peak
18. Where Angels Fear to Tread
19. Shadowlands
20. Waking Ned Divine
21. The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain
22. Akeelah and the Bee
23. Princess Caraboo
24. Avalon
25. What About Bob?
26. That Thing You Do
27. The Secret of Raon Inish
28. Amazing Grace
29. The Straight Story
30. Awakenings
31. Unstrung Heros
32. My Dog Skip
Of this list, I have personally seen about 12 of them (so far), and can agree that those twelve, at least, are generally decent and unoffensive. Some are more edifying than others; some are just entertainment. But, without any equivocation whatsoever, I would highly recommend “Amazing Grace,” an excellent, inspiring historical drama based on a true story.
